Life Cycle Of A Butterfly Colouring Pages

Kids love to colour as it’s a relaxing, therapeutic and easy activity. These butterfly colouring pages that I have for you will also teach young kids basic science on the metamorphosis of a caterpillar to a butterfly.

There are 4 stages in the butterfly life cycle and there are 4 sections on the colouring page to represent each stage – the egg, the caterpillar (larva), the chrysalis (pupa) and the butterfly (adult).

As butterflies start to come out in Spring, these can be used as Spring colouring pages to help kids think about the changes in nature during this season. They also make great Summer colouring activities for kids as we see many butterflies during the Summertime too.

Below is a life cycle of a butterfly colouring page plus a caterpillar and butterfly colour by number page.

Before your kid starts colouring these butterfly printable sheets, you might want to explain to them about the process of how caterpillars become butterflies. One easy way to do this is by reading them a book.

5 books for young kids that give a life cycle of a butterfly explanation:

  1. The Very Hungry Caterpillar
  2. Little Caterpillar
  3. Caterpillar Spring: Butterfly Summer
  4. Butterfly (My Little Green World, 4)
  5. How Does A Butterfly Grow?

How to use these butterfly colouring pages

Below you will find the 2 PDF colouring pages which are for printing in landscape format on A4 paper. You can also turn this life cycle of a butterfly colouring page into a sequencing activity by covering the stages and asking your child what comes next.

The colour by number worksheet directs your child on what colour they should use for each part of the colouring sheet. I have deliberately made it an easy colour by numbers activity so it’s suitable for young kids ( though they may need a little direction). You can also use it as a paint by number activity if you prefer.
